Fitness - Circuit Training
Circuit training is an efficient and challenging form of physical conditioning. It is an interval training method which is a combination of high-intensity aerobics and resistance training. Strength exercises are combined with endurance or aerobic exercises; mixing the benefits of a cardiovascular and a strength training workout. It helps to develop cardiovascular fitness, strength, endurance (both aerobic and anaerobic), flexibility and coordination. It consists of a number of stations, each with a different exercise to be performed, that are visited in rapid succession. Each exercise is performed for a specified number of repetitions or for a prescribed time before moving on to the next exercise. The exercises within each circuit are separated by brief, timed rest intervals, and each circuit is separated by a longer rest period. An exercise "circuit" is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program; the idea being that when one circuit is complete, you start at the first exercise again for another circuit. A well-designed circuit can help to correct the imbalances that occur in any sport played to a high level. It can also be one of the best types of training for improving strength endurance. Circuit training is superb for general fitness and due to its inherent versatility, can be easily tailored to the specific needs of an individual; catering for a wide variety of fitness levels. It is a great time saver and can be a refreshing and fun change from the more monotonous types of exercise, however, due to the nature of the workout, it is important to conduct a warm up at the start of the session and a cool down at the end of the session.
